Five Gentle Prompts to Reconnect With Your Birth Story

Updated: May 8

Sometimes it’s not about remembering everything. It’s about letting one detail rise to the surface. A smell. A moment. A feeling. A pause.

That’s where this practice begins.

For many of us, birth happened in a blur. Maybe it was empowering, maybe it was traumatic. Maybe it didn’t go the way we hoped. And yet—somewhere inside us—the story still lives. Unfolding in layers. Waiting to be heard.

That’s what journaling can offer: A way to return. To witness. To reclaim.

You don’t need to be a “writer” to do this. You just need a few moments and a little permission to begin.

These five prompts are a place to start—on your own terms, in your own time.

1. What energy were you carrying into birth?

What surrounded you in those final days or hours? What were you holding emotionally, physically, or spiritually?Did you feel ready? Untethered? Quiet? Raw?

Begin there. Before the birth itself. In the space around it.

2. What do you remember about the environment?

Not the clinical checklist, but the textures of the moment. Was there music? Warm light? A scratchy hospital gown? A certain smell?Memory often begins in the senses.

3. What surprised you?

Did something catch you off guard—about your body, the experience, or the people around you?Sometimes the smallest moments carry the biggest truths.

4. What support did you receive—or wish you had?

This one can be tender. Take your time.Who was present? Who showed up for you—or didn’t?What did you need in that moment? What do you still need now?

5. What do you want to carry forward from your birth?

What part of your story—however complex—feels meaningful? What wisdom came through? What do you want to honor as part of who you are now?

Your story deserves space.

These are just starting points. You don’t need to answer them all. Let one question take you where you need to go.
